NHS director awarded £933,000 in race discrimination case

A former NHS divisional director has been awarded £933,000 compensation after a tribunal found that he had been subjected to racial discrimination and unfair dismissal.

Elliot Browne, who is 55, had worked for the NHS for more than 30 years. His career came to an end in 2008 when he lost his management job with Central Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

Mr Browne claimed he had been harassed and verbally bullied because he was the only black director in his department.

The employment tribunal found that he had been subjected to "discriminatory treatment from 2007 onwards". He was repeatedly singled out as being responsible for overspending while white directors escaped reprimand.

The discrimination affected Mr Browne’s health. He became depressed and needed psychiatric help.

The tribunal awarded Mr Browne a total of £933,115 for unfair dismissal, aggravated damages and loss of earnings and pension.
